Microbiome : bacteria are silent heroes of our immune system

22 October 2018

Did you know, there are about 100,000 billion cells in the human body, 1/10 of which is not real cells but bacteria, viruses, fungi and billions of other tiny organisms called are microorganisms. They form a bacterial population - the "microbiome", found in the skin, nose, mouth and intestines. This is an important part of the immune system, which protects the body from aggressions organisms.

Why is that ? Let's find out.

What are these microorganisms?

These microorganisms are the oldest form of life in the Earth, surviving more than 3.5 billion years. For the past 6 million years, they have evolved and created a complex relationship with humans. To be healthy, human beings need microorganisms and many microorganisms need special environments on our bodies to survive.

The most diverse microorganisms population is on the skin, with at least 1,000 species of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Most of them are harmless, even beneficial to the skin. They maintain a stable shield, which makes it difficult for foreign microorganisms to penetrate through the skin.

A healthy skin has a stable, balanced population, which has a protection ability and can inhibit the activity of acne inflammation bacteria. Besides, a strong "microbiome" helps the skin to grow naturally, evenly, and gives radiant and young appearance to the skin.

Why must we protect the balance of bacteria on the skin?

Do not worry too much because of so many bacteria on skin. Actually, these bacteria have nothing to scare us. Furthermore, they act as a shield against external aggressions (UV, pollution, evaporation ...). The microbial population on the skin is quite stable. However, when some bacteria grow too much due to the environment, hygiene, wrong use of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,… , the imbalance will appear. Hence, the skin natural barrier will be damaged, allowing the bacteria to cause acne. To prevent this process, we need to reset the natural barrier. When good bacteria and bad bacteria are balanced, the protective barrier will work smoothly to help the skin look healthy, smooth and alive.

So how to protect this balance?

Skin pH is about 5.5, slightly acid. So, to maintain stability of the skin barrier, we should avoid soaps, gels, alkaline detergents. Choose the products with the lowest percentage of preservatives.

Use moderately warm water instead of hot water to not affect our body flora population.

Anti-bacterial hand washing gel is very popular and is dedicated to hand sanitizing because it kills bacteria very well. They may be helpful in antibacterial treatment, but take note to use them under medical prescription and no longer than necessary time.

Excessive exfoliation can also affect the skin and flora population of the skin.

In addition, you can also balance your skin with a healthy life style and diet to keep your skin healthy and get a balanced microorganisms population in order to avoid the invasion from harmful organisms.

Then, you will get a smooth face without worries about acne.
