Humulus Lupulus is a species of perennial, herbaceous climbing plant in the Cannabaceae family. Also known as European hop, this plant is dioecious, meaning that there are male and female plants. The female plants produce fruit that become cones called strobiles.
These strobiles are covered in leafy hop clover, which is used in phytotherapy.
The principle active ingredients in the strobile:
Sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes.
Sesquiterpenes make up 50 to 80% of humulus lupulus essential oils. Monoterpenes have only a trace presence. Sesquiterpenes acts as a hypotensor (lowers blood pressure), anti-inflammatory, soothing, lymphatic decongestive, and antihistamine and is believed to alleviate tumors. Monoterpenes act as a lymphatic tonic, antiseptic, anti-viral, stimulant and analgesic.
Used by the Romans in Antiquity, Humulus Lupulus was only introduced as a medicinal plant in phytotherapy around the 10th century. Arab doctors were the first to recognize it for its calming and soporific properties. During the medieval period, a celebrated herbalist, Hildegarde de Bingen (1099-1179) discovered the antiseptic and preservative properties of Humulus Lupulus strobiles.
Hops make it possible for beer to be kept better and longer, not to mention its aromatic properties.
Humulus Lupulus has always been a part of beer brewing!
The tonic, healing and protective properties of Humulus Lupulus were not lost on Cornaline. This is why advanced research has made it possible to demonstrate its positive effect on pigmentation of the skin.
Wet nurses who had problems producing milk were advised to take Humulus Lupulus (hops) because it was believed to stimulate milk production.
